Dear Lazy Yogi, Do you believe there is such a thing as right and wrong? Is there any point in debates of morals and ethical concerns? How would one go about figuring out the truth of these matters if there is one. I find myself unable to take a stance because both sides of what people bring up have an important meaning to it, even if what they say make you feel uncomfortable. Is there such things as truth? I thank you for sharing your beautiful wisdom.

lazyyogi:

Life doesn’t exist in a vacuum. There are an infinite number of factors involved in any given situation. The notion of objective morality, to me, is not only unnatural but also impossible.

In truth, morality isn’t necessary. What is necessary is to be in touch with the heart. Compassion renders morality obsolete. Given the choice between what is compassionate and what is “right”, I would choose compassion.

Compassion knows to refrain from harming others not because of an ethical code of conduct but because it is in touch with suffering. Compassion is made from a raw heart that fearlessly exposes itself to the pains of human life.

Only those who are deadened and detached required a code of conduct to remind them of what’s acceptable and what isn’t.

Taking stances and engaging in debates is an ego-mind game. The heart has no stance other than Love. It doesn’t deal with hypotheticals and mental concepts. It relates directly to living existence.

Once the sun has risen, we no longer need to use the meager light of the moon. Once the heart is open, we do not need abstract moralities.

Namaste :)
